Welcome to Balancing the Christian Life.
00:00:10.073 --> 00:00:10.653
Quick Thoughts.
00:00:10.653 --> 00:00:11.974
I'm Dr Kenny Embry.
00:00:11.974 --> 00:00:14.688
Join me as we figure out what it means to live as a Christian.
00:00:16.399 --> 00:00:19.914
Idolatry is one of the sins of the Old Testament I can't relate to very well.
00:00:19.914 --> 00:00:25.992
I don't understand how or why the Israelites were ever tempted by statues of wood or metals.
00:00:25.992 --> 00:00:35.670
It seems silly to invest any kind of trust into the very materials we surround ourselves with, and from an outsider's point of view it is silly.
00:00:35.670 --> 00:00:43.293
Isaiah even made the point that the people would take a log, make a statue out of one half of it, then burn the other half.
00:00:43.293 --> 00:00:45.106
Look, it's all the same thing.
00:00:45.106 --> 00:00:48.906
The very thing they burned was the same thing they worshipped.
00:00:48.906 --> 00:00:53.905
Yeah, that's stupid, but our idols end up looking pretty similar.
00:00:53.905 --> 00:01:00.823
We use our time and resources in the pursuit of stupid stuff, and we know it's stupid as we're doing it.
00:01:00.823 --> 00:01:07.341
And if you don't, then let me admit that I do it as we're doing it.
00:01:07.341 --> 00:01:08.484
And if you don't, then let me admit that I do.
00:01:08.504 --> 00:01:10.390
Do any of us for a moment believe money or greed are virtues?
00:01:10.390 --> 00:01:20.120
We can quote 1 Timothy 6, where we're told the love of money is the root of all evil, and most of us are quick to point out that it's the love of money and not money itself.
00:01:20.120 --> 00:01:24.409
Yet how much of our lives is spent pursuing money?
00:01:24.409 --> 00:01:28.421
How many times are we tempted to work for more to make more?
00:01:28.421 --> 00:01:33.873
Or, on the opposite end, how many of us are willing to clip coupons to save a buck?
00:01:33.873 --> 00:01:44.670
If we're honest with ourselves, we know money is one of our motivations and it's an easy thing that has become an idol to us and those around us.
00:01:44.670 --> 00:01:53.159
Let's face it we're often more interested in lifestyles of the rich and famous and not wasting time with the poor and obscure.
00:01:53.159 --> 00:01:58.813
God has told us outright we cannot serve him and greed.
00:01:58.813 --> 00:02:03.859
So how do we avoid making money our master?
00:02:03.859 --> 00:02:11.995
Let me suggest three quick recommendations from someone who has failed at this far more times than I can imagine.
00:02:12.920 --> 00:02:15.469
First, pray about your problem.
00:02:15.469 --> 00:02:19.631
The reason we pray isn't to inform God.
00:02:19.631 --> 00:02:22.808
God already knows what problem you have.
00:02:22.808 --> 00:02:25.367
He knows how much money affects you.
00:02:25.367 --> 00:02:27.546
He knows it better than you do.
00:02:27.546 --> 00:02:31.569
But money is one of those things we love to fool ourselves about.
00:02:31.569 --> 00:02:39.111
We think we can handle it, but if you admit to God this is a problem, you're really admitting to yourself.
00:02:39.111 --> 00:02:42.348
Second, be more generous.
00:02:42.348 --> 00:02:48.673
You might not have a lot of money, but I promise you have something that could help someone else.
00:02:48.673 --> 00:02:55.133
It could be a few bucks, a few minutes or letting somebody have your expertise for a little while.
00:02:55.133 --> 00:03:03.050
If you want to lose greed, gain generosity, give freely what others cannot afford.
00:03:03.050 --> 00:03:06.550
Finally, try spending fast.
00:03:06.550 --> 00:03:10.751
This looks identical to saving money, but it has a different goal.
00:03:10.751 --> 00:03:19.770
When we pursue money by either working for more or saving, we're keeping money and greed in the driver's seat.
00:03:19.770 --> 00:03:26.013
But if we devalue what money can do at all, it has less power overs.
00:03:27.420 --> 00:03:33.334
For many years, at my family's Thanksgiving, we would play a competitive basketball game with the family.
00:03:33.334 --> 00:03:43.014
I wasn't a good player and it was easy to get mad, frustrated or both, because I could not seem to get the ball where I wanted it.
00:03:43.014 --> 00:03:46.490
But one year something magical happened.
00:03:46.490 --> 00:03:50.871
I stopped caring whether my team won or lost.
00:03:50.871 --> 00:03:57.753
The taunting didn't mean anything because the game didn't mean anything.
00:03:57.753 --> 00:04:05.269
Frankly, I don't remember what years my team won or lost because I stopped caring.
00:04:06.591 --> 00:04:08.234
Now do the same thing for spending.
00:04:08.234 --> 00:04:14.770
Try spending fast because you don't care about what money can buy.
00:04:14.770 --> 00:04:33.444
I know that's really difficult because I'm asking you to take the emotions out of money and frankly, it's the emotions that are the problem, but intentionally take a break from spending for a day, two days or a week and see what, if anything, changes.
00:04:33.444 --> 00:04:36.714
See if you think about God differently.
00:04:36.714 --> 00:04:40.163
See if you see your relationships differently.
00:04:40.163 --> 00:04:48.163
See who you are, apart from the little green pieces of paper that seem to change everything.
00:04:48.163 --> 00:04:51.838
Okay, let's take this to God.
00:04:51.838 --> 00:04:55.639
Dear Lord, we have a difficult relationship with money.
00:04:55.639 --> 00:04:57.797
You know that better than we do.
00:04:57.797 --> 00:05:01.839
Help us to make money, our servant and not our master.
00:05:01.839 --> 00:05:06.401
We know money is necessary for us, but loving it isn't.
00:05:06.401 --> 00:05:12.415
So, lord, help us to keep you where you belong and money where it belongs.
00:05:12.415 --> 00:05:17.497
Help us to be more generous and give what we can while we can.
00:05:17.497 --> 00:05:19.720
You are our Father.
00:05:19.720 --> 00:05:25.755
Help us to be good children In the name of our King, amen.
00:05:25.755 --> 00:05:30.343
Now let's be good and do good.
